Getting Adjusted to Your First Power Wheelchair

So you’re in the process of getting your first power chair. You have already scoped out the best chair, so now you need to know what you can expect from your new device. Good news! You’ve come to the right place because Aeroflow is here to prepare you for owning your new power wheelchair.  

Batteries/Motor

Your new chair is going to be powered by two batteries and a state of the art motor. Both will be critical for your chair to operate and following some basic rules will help keep them working longer. The batteries must be charged at least a few times a week since the most popular cause of batteries wearing out early is a lack of charging. Since your insurance company, if they helped cover the chair, will only help cover new batteries after your first year with the chair, and every six month after that, it’s important to take care of your batteries. To ensure longevity, make sure to read your owner’s manual and follow it to a tee.

If that method doesn’t work for you, a good rule of thumb is to charge the batteries at least 3 times a week. You can plug them in before you go to bed and it should be good to go by the time you wake up. For the motor, just remember two simple rules for preservation. Don’t get the motor wet and don’t use on steep hills. The motors in modern power chairs are designed for inside use and have never been good with water. If you must take your chair outdoors, we highly recommend that you stick to sidewalks and even terrain. Also, keep in mind that extensive outside use voids most power chair warranties.  

Joy Stick Control

Even though the power chair’s steering is easier once you’re used to it, it certainly comes with growing pains. You’re going to hit every object in your home, twice. Luckily though, once you master it, you’ll be maneuvering with incredible ease. It’s also important to note that your joystick’s sensitivity can be adjusted by a technician. If you still can’t get used to the steering after a week of using your new chair, please contact your supplier and they should be able to adjust the sensitivity.  

Repairs

Make sure to talk to your supplier about what you need to do when your chair needs service. Also, make sure to understand what will void your warranty and what insurance will cover and when. In most cases, insurance will help cover repairs as long as there is no evidence of extensive outside use, water damage, etc.  

What if my supplier goes out of business?

In most cases, if your supplier goes out of business you can contact their number and a new company will have your information to service you chair. However, in special cases, like the Scooter Store, the government has shut the supplier down due to fraud and it’s going to be nearly impossible to get your chair serviced. The best way to avoid this is to research who you’re working with and make sure the reviews are positive.
