How to Tell if a Loved One Needs Mobility Assistance

It can certainly be a challenge to see a loved one age and become in need of mobility assistance, especially if that loved one is one or both of your parents. It is an emotional time when you realize that the people you always counted on now need you to take care of them. It can be even harder when once normal daily activities are neglected because your loved one can no longer move the way he or she once did. There are a few important things to look out for when assessing whether or not your family member or friend needs assistance with mobility. Here a just a few.

Trouble Getting Up From A Seated Position

If your loved one cannot get up from a chair to move to another area of the house, get to the bathroom, or leave the house in a safe manner, it may be time to think about a lift chair.  This chair comes in a variety of styles and commonly resembles a recliner chair, to fit in with any home décor. The use of a remote attached to the chair will enable the person seated in it to control how the chair moves forward and up to allow them to stand more easily.

Unexplained Bruising

All of us occasionally bump into something, develop a mark or bruise and later do not know how it got there, but if your loved one has increased bruises from losing balance or falling, a cane, walker, or rollator (a walker with wheels on the two front legs) may be something to look in to for him or her. Maybe they don’t need much help, just a little something to lean on.

Trouble Walking

Due to many conditions a person can develop because of age or accidents, there are a variety of mobility devices that can help. Depending on the situation, either a manual wheelchair, power wheelchair, or scooter may be what your family member needs.
